How to Make a Christmas Budget (and Stick to It)
Published 2026-10-27
Holiday spending sneaks up on people because it arrives in small pieces: one more gift, a second trip to the grocery store, a last-minute shipping fee. A budget made in October or November turns that into a plan you can pay for without a January credit card shock. You can do every step below in the Christmas budget calculator.
1. Decide your total first
Start from what you can afford, not from what you spent last year. Look at what you have saved and how many paychecks are left before December 25. Whatever you set aside from those paychecks, plus your savings, is your real budget.
2. Give every person a number
List everyone you buy for and put a dollar amount next to each name. A specific limit, such as $40 for a sibling or $20 for a teacher, is much easier to shop to than a vague total. Group smaller gifts together: one line for coworkers or neighbors is enough.
3. Count the things that aren't gifts
Gifts are often only half of holiday spending. Add a line for each of these:
- Food and drinks: the big dinner, baking and parties.
- Travel: flights, gas and hotel nights to see family.
- Holiday tips: year-end thank-yous for a sitter, house cleaner or building staff. See how much to tip for the holidays.
- Decorations: the tree, lights and replacements for anything broken.
- Cards, wrapping and shipping: small items that add up quickly, especially express postage in December.
4. Save a set amount each payday
Take what you still need (planned spending minus what you have saved) and divide it by your paychecks before Christmas. For example, if you plan $900, have $200 saved and get paid every two weeks with four paydays left, that is $175 from each paycheck.
5. Track as you shop
Update the amounts as you buy. If one gift costs more than planned, take the difference from another line straight away so the total does not drift.
Easy ways to spend less
- Suggest a Secret Santa for big families or office groups, so everyone buys one gift.
- Agree on a spending limit with friends, or swap experiences and homemade gifts.
- Use Black Friday and Cyber Monday for gifts already on your list, not extra purchases.
- Shop early to avoid paying for fast shipping.
